Thickening of Nail Plate
Several diseases, notably fungal infections (tinea unguim)and psoriasis lead to thickening of the entire nail-plate. The nail-plate looks brownish; the surface may remain smooth and shiny as in psoriasis, or become rough, irregular and dull as in tinea unguim. The presence of the fungus in the nail can be demonstrated by examining the clippings of the nail-plate under the microscope (KOH test) or by the culture examination. This change usually requires a prolonged and intensive treatment, especially if Thickening of Nail Plate involves the toe-nails.
