Paronychia

A swelling of the skin around the nail-plate is called 'paronychia'. The proximal nail-fold is commonly affected by Candida infection which usually is associated with Paronychia irregularity of the corresponding nail-plate and is especially frequent in diabetic individuals. The involvement of the lateral nail fold is usually caused by an acute bacterial infection and is often associated with an injury or a hang-nail.
