OnycholysisOnycholysis occurs in localised areas. Onycholysis frequently occurs when a saprophyte (non-disease producing) fungus gains entry under the nail-plate or if a psoriasis lesion appears on the nailbed. The saprophyte fungus usually produces a black area visible through the nail-plate, while a psoriasis lesion generally produces a yellowish spot surrounded by a reddish halo. The treatment of Onycholysis is usually difficult because the topically applied medicines generally do not reach the area where they are needed, while oral medicines are not as a rule required for treating minor/insignificant lesions. It may however, help to trim the nail closely and remove the portion of the nail-plate overlying the skin lesion, so that the topically applied medicines can reach the area of involvement. Alternatively, Onycholysis can be left untreated till the lesion disappears spontaneously.
