Discoloured of the Nails Plate

The nail-plate can easily get discoloured or stained by a variety of chemical agents applied locallyor ingested internally. The nail can become brown, black, yellow, red, green, blue or any other color, depending upon the chemical to which the nail has been exposed. The pigments (or drugs) taken orally generally get deposited into the nail-plate and thus the staining is usually uniform throughout the nail-plate. In contrast, the staining produced by external contact is most intense nearer the distal part of the nail-plate because the distal end is the oldest portion and has thus absorbed the maximum quantity of the chemical agent because of repeated exposures.

Treatment of Discoloured of the Nails Plate consists of identifying the cause and preventing/minimizing further exposures. The stained portions of the nails would gradually grow out in three to four months unless the exposures are continued.

Occasionally, the nail-plate can become pigmented due to the presence of a pigmented nevus in the region of the nail-matrix. Discoloured of the Nails Plate may produce a longitudinal black line in the nail-plate or the entire nail-plate may become brown/ black. The only treatment for Discoloured of the Nails Plate condition is to remove the corresponding portion of the nail-matrix but such a treatment is likely to lead to a permanent loss of the corresponding portion of the nail. Such a treatment therefore is not as a rule recommended.
