Clawing of the Nails
Sometimes the nail shows an extreme degree of side-to-side curvature and a variable degree of thickening of the nail plate. Such a nail cannot be trimmed or cut and thus, it grows beyond the end of the finger or the toe and starts resembling a claw. A mild degree of clawing (exaggerated side-to-side curvature of the nail-plate) occurs when there is a side-to-side pressure on the toe due to ill-fitting shoes; while an extreme degree of clawing is usually a structural abnormality without any obvious cause.
