Whiteheads

Whiteheads are a combination of oils, sebum and cellular fragments that produce firm to hard plugs within hair follicles. Whiteheads are closed from the top of the skin by the cellular fragments at the follicle opening. Because they have no contact with oxygen, they do not oxidize or turn brown, as blackheads do. Oxidization does not take place and the whiteheads do not turn brown. They appear light yellow in color and are also termed as milia. In combination with bacteria, these whiteheads can cause acne and in severe cases lead to cystic acne. Sebum contributes to skin oils and people with dry sebum may have dry skin and this may be especially true of people with chronic whiteheads but it is also possible to have dry sebum with oily skin. The mixture of beauty grains and skin tonic is rubbed gently on the affected areas, before being rinsed off with water. White heads should never be removed forcibly, even with a blackhead extractor. Forcible removal will only damage skin tissue and cause infection. With external care, you should include adequate amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. A glass of warm water with the juice of lemon, helps to cleanse the body of toxic residues and improve the elimination of waste.

Whiteheads, also known as closed comedones, are follicles that are filled with the same material, but have only a microscopic opening to the skin surface. Some skin specialists believe individuals with frequent and multiple blackheads and whiteheads produce sebum that is drier than normal and conducive to forming firm plugs. When linoleic acid is not available, the sebaceous glands produce sebum with oleic acid. This causes blackheads and whiteheads and both of these conditions may lead to acne infections. Whiteheads and blackheads, both symptoms of the skin condition acne, commonly appear on the face and shoulders, but they may also develop on the trunk, arms, legs, and buttocks. The skin around the eyes and cheeks and areas with fine skin is more prone to whiteheads. The whiteheads appear in the form of tiny, pearly white raised spots. They are common in the area just above the cheekbones, where the skin is fine. Using skin care products that do not suit the user's skin type or using inferior quality skin care products. Continuous exposure to sun can also cause milia. The skin gets thicker and this becomes a stumbling block in exfoliation of the epidermal layer.

Causes of Whiteheads

The common Causes of Whiteheads :

  • Blackheads and enlarged pores often go hand-in-hand. Whiteheads can either expand pores or simply focus attention on them. But pores can appear larger than life for many reasons,Whiteheads being but one of them.
  • Excessive exfoliation of skin cells contributes to the growth of milia. The dead skin cells quickly clog up the sebaceous follicles.
  • Some prescribed medications may also lead to formation of Whiteheads as a side effect , though this is a rare cause.

Symptoms of Whiteheads

Some Symptoms of Whiteheads :

  • Flaky skin shows the presence of Whiteheads.
  • Mouldy skin appearance.
  • Makeup doesn't stay in the skin of peoples, who are suffering from Whiteheads.

Treatment of Whiteheads

  • Acne surgery (by a well trained expert).
  • Oral antibiotics.
  • Topical antibiotics.
  • Alone or in combination with SD Alcohol 40, the Salicylic Acid makes for a very effective treatment against blackheads and whiteheads. This acid also serves to decrease the shedding of cells around hair follicles, thus acting pre-emptively against one of the causes of acne.
  • Benzoyl peroxide.
  • Most treatments take several weeks to months before a noticeable change is seen.
  • Tretinoin (Retin-A, Avita, Renova) is the mainstay of treatment for whiteheads and blackheads.
