Leucoderma

Leucoderma literally means 'white skin, and is a condition in which there is a localised loss of pigmentation of the skin. It is skin disorder where the skin loses its normal colour. The condition does not cause any organic harm. Leucoderma does not cause any health problems - it is not contagious or dangerous at all. There is a gradual loss of pigment melanin from the skin layer which results in white patches. Leucoderma is a fairly common disorder and it affects one per cent or more of the world's population. The disorder can occur at any age in either sex in normal skin. It is, however, more common in women than men. The most affected areas are the hands, the neck, the back and the wrist in that order. These patches look ugly, especially in persons with a dark complexion. This disease is caused neither by any germs, nor is it due to bad blood. It is considered to be neither infectious nor contagious. Patches of leucoderma can be of variable sizes and shapes. In fair individuals, leucoderma often goes unnoticed, but on dark skinned people it can be very visible and cause severe embarrassment. When leucoderma occurs without any preceding disease it is called vitiligo . Sometimes it follows burns and injuries.
