Scalp Acne

Scalp acne, also known as scalp folliculitis, is an unusual skin condition. Scalp acne is common in both men and women and it affects the people of all ages. The scalp acne is triggered during the periods of great stress. Scalp acne is not as common as some of the other types of acne such as facial acne but it is still very distressing for the sufferer. Scalp acne can occur on the arms, legs, chest, face and armpits. It mostly appears on the scalp. They appear as small pustules that look like white-yellowish in color. Bacteria around the hair follicles enter the skin if the whitehead ruptures causing a pimple. Squeezing the pimples can cause pitting and scars on the skin. Scalp acne, the mildest form of which is also known as scalp folliculitis, probably occurs more frequently than most people realize. A more severe form of scalp acne called acne necrotica miliaris is characterized by inflamed larger papules with black-colored crusts. This form of acne can leave behind scars that resemble those resulting from Chicken Pox. Mild forms of scalp acne can be treated the way most other acne is treated.

Like other forms of acne, scalp acne is caused by a bacteria that grows inside the pores clogged from an excess of oils and an accumulation of dead skin cells. Scalp acne can be just as irritating as any other type of acne to the sufferer and it can easily be made worse by using the wrong type of hair products. High stress can be the cause of scalp acne and it is also known by different names such as scalp folliculitis , necrotica miliaris etc. Scalp acne is also caused by certain micro-organisms like mites , bacteria and yeasts. Since oily hair is a contributing factor to scalp acne, using shampoo that is formulated for oily hair and scalp is another good option. Scalp acne has a tendency to develop more frequently in the winter months and during the change of seasons. The over the counter medications that are available for the treatment of acne may not be as effective at treating scalp acne. The best way to prevent the development of scalp acne is to keep the skin on the scalp clean and free of debris.
