Adult AcneAdult acne is a very common problem. Adult acne can be a painful and embarrassing problem for many women. Adult acne can be a condition with many contributing factors and as such may require an integrated approach. Although the causes of adult acne are unknown, it is thought that adult acne may sometimes have hormonal roots. Boys are more likely to suffer acne scarring than girls. But girls are more likely to have adult acne. For some women, pregnancy may sometimes worsen or improve adult acne because of its affects on hormone levels. Oral contraceptives may be used to improve the conditions associated with adult acne in some cases, although this is not recommended as a full-fledged acne solution. A person who is infected with adult acne should limit sun exposure and should avoid oil-based cosmetics. Regular washing of the affected area cleanses the bacteria and clogged pores. Some medications that can induce adult acne include anabolic steroids, some anti-epileptic medications, the anti-tuberculosis drugs isoniazid and rifampin, lithium and iodine-containing medications. Adult acne in women is more prominent due to the unbalanced hormone production during the menstrual cycle. Acne is not caused by poor hygiene or oily skin, but both can make the problem much harder to control. Adult acne affects 25% of all adult men and 50% of adult women at some time in their adult lives. Acne that occurs in adulthood may be difficult to treat if there are multiple recurrences. Working with chlorinated solvents can cause acne. It is called chloracne. Acne can also occur on the neck and upper arms. Although acne is not a serious health threat, severe acne can lead to disfiguring, permanent scarring, which can be upsetting to people who are affected by the disorder. People with acne frequently have a variety of lesions. The basic acne lesion, called the comedo, is simply an enlarged and plugged hair follicle. Treatment of acne begins with keeping the affected areas clean without using harsh abrasive cleaners, which can irritate already sensitive skin. In most serious cases of adult acne, the dermatologist usually prescribes medications containing isotretinoin, also derived from Vitamin A.
